GMA ARTIST CENTER NAG RIGODON! BAKIT KAYA?

AFTER IDA HENARES resigned as its head, GMA Artist Center reorganized into several divisions. Talent development is now headed by Arsi Baltazar. PR and Events is under Jenny Donato. They’re still looking for someone to handle talent management, but for talent branding and imaging, GMA exec Annette Gozon Abrogar has hired a young brand manager from Unilever, Simon Ferrer, who they formally presented to the media.

Simon will be in charge of positioning GMA stars and he’d push not only the big stars but the rest of GMA’s 100 plus talents to become marketable commodities. He first made an internal audit of how viewers perceive GMA stars, what are their strengths and weaknesses in the competitive landscape of showbiz. He has now planned several branding strategies and he bared his plans for specific GMA properties in our meeting with him, but told us not to write about it yet. For starters, he’s focusing to improve the imaging of Aljur Abrenica, Alden Richards, Rocco Nacino, Bianca King, Kris Bernal and Rhian Ramos.

TV 5 PINATUNGAN NG MAS MALAKING PROJECT ANG NAWALANG PELIKULA NI DERECK SA STAR CINEMA!

Now that Derek Ramsay has moved to TV 5, do he and his girlfriend, Angelica Panganiban (who’s with ABS-CBN) swap Network inside stories?

“Nope,” he said. “Angel and I don’t get involved with each other’s careers. When we’re together, work takes a backseat.”

How does he feel that he will no longer do the movie slated for him and Bea Alonzo? “I regret that,” he sighed. “But I understand and respect Star Cinema’s decision.”

Although the remake of “Totoy Bato,” which he has been tapped for, more than makes up for the shelved project at ABS-CBN, Derek said, “I’m nervous because it’s an FPJ classic. I’m going to watch all his films to prepare for it. But I’ll try to add a little of my own style to the role, so I must be in shape.”

ANALYTS SAY ITS INEVITABLE FOR GMA NETWORK FALL!

A formal price offer still has to be worked out to bridge a P15-billion gap to swing the deal, but all major industry indicators—dropping profits, shifting consumer markets, rising costs, expensive new technology and cut-throat competition—are conspiring to make the buyout of GMA 7 inevitable, market analysts say.

For weeks, the industry has been abuzz with reports that acquisition talks were under way. But price matters most, and one has to read the nuanced signals correctly.

GMA EXECS ADMIT DESIRE TO BECOME NO.1 CAUSED THEM TO INCUR HUGE PROFIT DROPS IN 2011!

GMA-7 is controlled by the Duavit, Gozon and Jimenez families. The Gozon group, represented by GMA chairman Felipe L. Gozon, had admitted in the past that the company could be sold for “the right price.”

The sale of GMA-7 to the PLDT group nearly happened in 2001 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Duavit said agreements had been reached on the price for a majority stake of the firm, but the deal fell through because of issues encountered by the buyer that were not related to price.

But conditions could be right this time around.

DEREK RAMSY STARTING TO FEEL THE PAIN OF LEAVING ABS-CBN!

Negative implications are starting to turn up for actor Derek Ramsay since he transferred to TV 5 from ABS CBN.

Recently, he was dropped from the movie that he was doing for five days under Star Cinema with actress Bea Alonzo. It was management’s decision and he is going to be replaced by John Lloyd Cruz.

This marks the return of the John Lloyd-Bea tandem which has been quite successful.

ABS-CBN POSTS RECORD HIGH AD REVENUES LAST MARCH!

“In January ad minutes went down by double digits. In February we saw some signs of recovery, but last March we had an all-time high for that month,” ABS-CBN chief financial officer Ron Valdueza told reporters. “We hope to sustain this momentum the rest of the year.”

Valdueza said the company might benefit from the unofficial start of the midterm campaign season by the fourth quarter of this year, “but it probably wouldn’t be that much.”

ABS-CBN MAGPAPAPLIT NANAMAN NG NOONTIME SHOW?

THERE is a rumor that ABS-CBN’s “It's Showtime” days are soon over.

There’s news that it’s going to be replaced by a new variety show led by the trio of Richard Gomez, Joey Marquez and John Estrada.

There had been a lot of shows pitted against “Eat Bulaga,” but none (except for a couple or so days) managed to topple it in the ratings.

GMA-7 BECOMING A MOVIE CHANNEL? QUALITY OF SHOWS ON A DECLINE!

With press releases left and right claiming their national supremacy in the ratings game, one could wonder why an article like this is being written to portray GMA Network as declining.

Business-wise, the Kapuso network is sound. It is earning. And it is not in debt.

One is the slow and low content development. The network, amid its claim of being the top rating network, lags behind ABS-CBN in the number of shows in development, and the number of locally-produced shows currently being aired.

MVP: P60 BILLION TAG PRICE NG GMA NOT WORTH IT!

MANILA, Philippines - Too expensive. That's how TV5 chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan described the P60 billion price tag sought for rival GMA Network Inc.

"Sobrang mahal yun," Pangilinan said when asked if his group would shell out double GMA Network's market value for full ownership of the broadcast company.

At the close of trading on Monday, listed GMA Network shares were priced at P9.40 each, valuing the company at P31.929 billion.
Pangilinan was supposed to have offered P45 billion for GMA Network, but the three families controlling the broadcast firm - the Duavits, Gozons, and Jimenezes - would sell for at least P60 billion.
Gilberto Duavit Jr., GMA Network president, said in a press release that they "are presently not in serious negotiations with the PLDT group as we have not yet received an offer price that is acceptable to us."

CHRISTIAN BAUTISTA TO TRANSFER TO TV5?

Following rumors of an impending transfer to another television network, singer Christian Bautista confirmed that TV5 has offered him an opportunity to host an upcoming reality singing contest.

But he was quick to add that nothing has been finalized.

“Wala pa namang final. Nagkaroon lang ng pag-uusap, ng negotiation. I’m still under contract with ABS-CBN until August. After August, tignan po natin,” Bautista said during the press launch of his coffee table book, “First Class.”

“Life goes on, work goes on, but we’ll see if there are opportunities when the contract ends [sa ABS-CBN, TV5 o GMA].”

Bautista said his girlfriend, “The Kitchen Musical” co-star Carla Dunareanu, is also open to working in a new environment.

ABS-CBN REMAINS NO.1 IN SUNDAY AFTERNOON!

Despite dominating the afternoon ad-rich block from Mondays to Saturdays with its titanic noontime block timer EAT Bulaga, GMA-7 still trails behind in the Sunday Afternoon viewing no thanks to ABS-CBN's unbeatable trio, ASAP, LUV U and The Buzz!

GMA-7 takes 6 out the 7-day week consistently topping rankings on the Daytime viewing. But the story is entirely different on Sundays where ABS-CBN remains its grip in the National Urban. ABS-CBN's remaining turf includes all-week primetime block and Sunday Afternoon Block, the rest of the time slots are already captured by GMA-7 may it be in Mega Manila or National Urban.

JAPANESE DTV STANDARD OFFERS MORE BENEFITS! WHY CAN'T GMA7 SEE THIS?

There is a digital divide in this country that is also an unfortunate social divide. It separates those who can afford cable television subscription and those who rely on those ancient rabbit ear/aerial antennas.

No more than a million Filipinos subscribe to cable television. So, over 90 million Filipinos suffer poor reception, grainy pictures and choppy audio. They are also denied the abundance of channel choices the rich folks get with cable television.

When ABS-CBN conducted digital television (DTV) trials in more than 1,000 households all over the Philippines, the residents raved about the impeccable picture and sound quality and were thrilled with the wider array of programs. One mother who tested the digibox for a week tried to convince the ABS-CBN team to sell it to her. She did not want to return it because her whole family was hooked and loved the service.

Wilma, we all know, retired from GMA-7 after serving the Network for 19 years.

Now 60 years old, it was during her time sa GMA-7 na nag-pioneer ang ilang mga bagong approach in programming ng network. Thus, were born the high-rated shows na Starstruck, a reality talent show, Mulawin at ang ilang programang hango sa mga kilalang komiks characters tulad ng Captain Barbell at Darna.

ABS-CBN PLANS TO SIGN UP JESSICA SANCHEZ AS KAPAMILYA TALENT!

FILIPINO fans of Jessica Sanchez are all eyes on her from day one  of her American Idol journey.  While her chance of bagging the title is visible, she may lose it in the blink of an eye.  The ‘save card’ vote  by the  hosts, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler has assured her of a continued shot in the competition but the text votes of the American viewers will what determine her future.

Trouble is, there are only a few Filipino-Americans when weighed with the majority of true-blue American people.  So, there is still a doubt whether or not she’d stay in the game until her hand is raised as winner. Now, what will happen if she doesn’t bag the title? Will she have a chance to be a big recording artist in mainstream America?

MANILA, Philippines - Despite cuts in advertising and rising production costs, Valdueza said ABS-CBN would pursue an "aggressive" spending plan in 2012, even as competitor GMA-7 tightens its belt.

The bright spot for ABS-CBN was the strong 10% revenue growth (P4.3-B) in broadband as unit Sky Cable grew subscribers 18% year on year.

The financial officer expects capital expenditures to reach about P5 billion in 2012; in 2011, it was P4.2 billion.
