MANILA - Multimedia giant ABS-CBN on Wednesday opened its first store in the country, cementing its entry into the telecommunications market.
Speaking at the launch, ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio Lopez III likened the momentous event to the first-ever television broadcast in the country of a garden party at the residence of former Philippine president Elpidio Quirino.
"This opening of this ABS-CBN Mobile's first store is equivalent of that garden party coverage," Lopez said. "It is the beginning of a new age in Philippine media."
The event, held at the store itself, was also graced by ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio and celebrity endorsers Julia Montes and Erich Gonzales. It also featured a performance by singer Isa Fabregas of "The Voice Philippines."
"Today, we are fulfilling a mission to be of service to the Filipino people," Lopez added.
Aside from sending SMS, making calls and browsing the internet, users will also be able to watch their favorite shows through the iWanTV mobile application, exclusive to ABS-CBMmobile subscribers.
"People who, for instance, missed their favorite programs or who are in transit or have different work hours will be able to watch them on their preferred mobile devices through iWantTV Mobile," said ABS-CBNmobile marketing head Nandy Villar.
ABS-CBNmobile subscribers will also have access to the iWant Stars mobile application, which provides exclusive content, photos and videos from their favorite Kapamilya stars such as Daniel Padilla, Kathryn Bernardo, Enrique Gil and Enchong Dee.
"Fans will have access to exclusive photos about what the stars are doing for the day so that fans can easily keep track. And a lot of these aren't available elsewhere," said Villar.
Launched last month, ABS-CBNmobile sought to help the survivors of typhoon "Yolanda" (international name: Haiyan) reach their relatives.
The ABS-CBNmobile store is located at the ground floor of the ELJ Communications Center, ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.
