TV5, the television station owned by MediaQuest Holdings Inc. of the PLDT group, has cornered 10 percent of the viewers’ market in the first two years of its relaunching, a media research company said.
“Their current trend is very good. In terms of ratings, they are already in strong number three,” Jay Bautista, executive director of Nielsen Media Philippines, told reporters.
He said reprogramming and focusing on the so-called “vulnerable’’ audience, especially the kids, allowed TV5 to capture over 10 percent of the country’s TV viewers.
Bautista said TV5 still lagged behind ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., GMA Network Inc. and their units in terms of advertising revenues.
“They have not caught up yet since you need to first convince the advertisers that you have a solid audience, then the advertising confidence follows,” he said.
He said ABS-CBN and GMA Network were getting almost 100 percent of the advertising revenues in the television industry and that other networks received a little portion of the total budget.
Bautista said TV5 could easily be at par with the country’s top TV networks if its distribution improved and line of programming would rate.
“They have to go nationwide first before you get the ratings,” he said.
“With the financial backing of its parent firm, I am sure they can get quality talents and can produce quality shows,” Bautista said.
TV5 earlier said it would have a nationwide coverage in the middle of next year.

…Ricky Carandang is Broadcast Journalist of the Year.
ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel , DZMM Radyo Patrol 630, and ANC anchor Ricky Carandang made a sweep of the broadcasting honors at the 2010 Rotary Club of Manila (RCM) Journalism Awards held yesterday (June 17) at Manila Polo Club.
ANC won as TV News Station of the Year while DZMM took home the Radio Station of the Year trophy. Carandang, on the other hand, was proclaimed Broadcaster of the Year.
Receiving the TV News Station of the Year award was ANC chief operating officer Glenda Gloria, who reiterated the country’s only 24/7 news channel’s thrust to go beyond merely breaking news to actually setting the news agenda for the day.
“ANC is the channel that watches while the nation sleeps and asks when all answers seem clear. It has been our commitment to stand for truth and vigilance and this award will serve as a reminder to us to continue to uphold public trust,” she said.
ANC’s top anchor Carandang, meanwhile, has solidified his stature as one of the country’s top broadcast journalists with his “Broadcaster of the Year” award. The co-anchor of “The Rundown” on ANC is known for his deft analysis of issues and events, a skill which has set him apart from his contemporaries.
“This is my tenth year at ABS-CBN and my first major award. I will strive to maintain the ethical and professional standards of required by ABS-CBN and recognized by the Rotary Club,” said Carandang.
ABS-CBN Manila Radio Division Head Peter Musngi, on the otherhand, saluted the men and women of DZMM TeleRadyo for its third Radio Station of the Year award from RCM.
“This only proves the dedication of DZMM to be the first in news and in public service. This award serves as inspiration to DZMM to continue reaching out to our countrymen wherever they are in the world, especially now that we are expanding the operations of DZMM TeleRadyo to the Middle East, Australia, and Europe,” he said.
RCM has been recognizing outstanding performance of individuals and agencies in media since 1966.
