ABS-CBN WINS LIBEL CASE FILED BY RIVAL GMA NETWORK!

THE Court of Appeals (CA) has upheld its ruling in August that turned down P100-million damage suit filed by GMA Network Incorporated against rival ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation.

The case stemmed from two separate programs of ABS-CBN wherein its anchors had accused people from GMA of allegedly stealing a five-second video footage of the former, and portrayed them to their viewers as "thieves," "snatchers," and "usurpers."

Based on record, both ABS-CBN and GMA networks deployed news teams to cover the arrival in July 22, 2004 of de la Cruz, an overseas Filipino worker kidnapped in Iraq.

(ABS) suffered a 23% drop in its 9M2011 net income to Php2.24 billion as consolidated revenues declined by 15% mainly due to the absence of election-related ads which were evident at the first two quarters of 2010 and a slowdown in regular ads as multinationals decreased advertising expenses due to the global uncertainties. HIGHER TALENT FEE PUSHED ABS-CBN'S EXPENSES UP!

ABS-CBN Corp., the biggest broadcasting company, said competition is putting pressure on its cost, especially on talent fees, after rival TV5 offered higher pay on its artists.

“There will be some pressure in our costs, talent fees in particular,” ABS-CBN chief financial officer Rolando Valdueza said.

He said the practice of “pirating” major stars and the transfer of a few to TV5 had prompted the ABS-CBN management to renegotiate and improve contract terms of talents.

“[We effected] adjustment in their talent fees [and gave] more work to do,” Valdueza said.

TV5 SCORES MORE NOMINATIONS IN THE ASIAN TV AWARDS THAN ABS-CBN AND GMA!

MANILA, Philippines – Recently revamped TV5 romped off with more nominations than ABS-CBN and GMA-7 in this year's Asian Television Awards (ATA).

The finalists in the 2011 ATA were announced Thursday by organizing publication,

Television Asia Plus, which were trimmed from a total of 224 entries spanning 13 countries.

TV5's "Talentadong Pinoy" and "Lokomoko" got the nod in the Best General Entertainment category and Best Comedy Programme categories, respectively. "Ito Ang Buhay Ko," the theme song from the network's “Star Confessions,” also landed on the ATA Best Theme Song shortlist.

ABS-CBN and GMA-7 have two nominations each.

GOVERNMENT TO RECONSIDER THE EUROPEAN STANDARD ONCE MORE!

The much-awaited issuance of the implementing rules and regulation (IRR) on Digital Terrestrial Television will most likely not happen this year.

Gamaliel Cordoba, commissioner of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), told Malaya Business Insight in a phone interview that the government had asked the NTC, along with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), to make a "migration plan" for the smooth shift from analog to digital TV.

SHARON CUNETA TO SIGN A P1 BILLION CONTRACT DEAL WITH TV5!!

Nobody from TV5  and Kapamilya Network would confirm nor deny  the report, but according to Ricky Lo’s column,  Megastar, Ms. Sharon Cuneta, will seal a whooping P1 billion contract with the Kapatid Network!!!

This deal will include a daily talk show and so far, it’s the biggest deal yet for a local artist.   It was Boss Vic del Rosario, who negotiated with TV5.  A blind item also indicated that that Megastar will sing the Station ID  theme song of TV5.

Rumor has it that early this year, Piolo Pascual was asking for the same amount when offered by TV5. But somebody close to TV5 says, “he is not worth it.”  Piolo Pascual has denied the rumor.

The three media giants not only shared similar beliefs on the need to keep up with changing technology but also in their confidence about the future of the broadcast industry even if there are now three major players competing for advertising revenue.

ABS-CBN has estimated to spend P3 billion for migration to Digital TV, P500 million of which have already been spent for the transmitter, acquisitions and film rights, according to Rolando Valdueza, the company’s chief finance officer.

GMA Network's newest international channel — GMA News TV International — is now available in 18 areas across the globe.

GMA News TV is the network's third international channel, with the first being GMA Pinoy TV (with some two million viewers) and GMA Life TV (with about a million viewers).

GMA Network also expanded the overseas reach of its AM radio station DZBB and FM radio station DWLS via its third quarter launches in FetchTV Australia, Hawaiian Telecom, and Time Warner Carolinas and North East Region.

The low budgeted Korean Drama, Helena's Promise, unexpectedly became an instant GOLD MINE for ABS-CBN as it booked a total of 51 ad spots in its premiere last November 14, 2011! This is despite the show's demising debut with only 4 percentage points household ratings in Mega Manila. Helena's Promise became the highest loading Kapamilya Gold program even beating the top rater, Reputasyon (30 ads) and the highly hyped reality program Pinoy Big Brother Unli Day (36 ads)! It also bested other GMA afternoon prime shows Kokak (49 ads), Kung Aagawin mo ang Langit (49 ads) and Kung Ikaw lang ang Mamahalin in terms of product placements.

SURVIVOR PHILS WINS BIG IN VIEWERSHIP AND PRODUCT PLACEMENTST!

The premiere of Survivor Phils proved to be a huge success after its blockbuster debut on Monday that brought the reality program on top of the advertiser's choice! The 4th installation of the internationally  hit franchise garnered a staggering 54 product placements placing it in a close second with the highly budgeted AMAYA that raked in 57 product placements! Its competing program from ABS-CBN, My Binondo Girl earned a respectable 46 product placements making it a modest competitor in the ad market.

Survivor Phils out ranked other primetime programs of the same genra as Pinoy Big Brother only attracted 23 product placement,  barely making half of Survivor's ad revenues for the night. It also bested ABS-CBN's best performing program, 100 Days to Heaven which only earned roughly 49 product placements. Survivor Phils cleary stood as the advertiser's choice even if 100 Days to Heaven garnered more viewers in Mega Manila and NUTAM.    

WEAK AIRTIME SALES IN OCTOBER CUTS ABS-CBN NET NCOME FORECAST FOR 2011!

MANILA, Philippines – The fallout from a weakening global economy and intense competition were cited among the reasons for lower net income expectations for 2011 by broadcasting firm ABS-CBN Corp.

At a  press briefing on Monday, officials said the company is looking to post  lower net income, ranging from P2.4 billion to P2.6 billion, compared to 2010’s  P3.17 billion.

ABS-CBN FAILS IN A LEGAL BATTLE ANEW! LABOR GROUP TRUMPS!

Overturning earlier decisions of the labor court, the Court of Appeals has upheld the right of television  “talents” to receive the same compensation and benefits as regular network employees.

In a much-awaited decision, the appellate court said the National Labor Relations Court (NLRC) committed “grave abuse of discretion” when it twice threw out the petition of a group of “talents” who sued network giant ABS-CBN for refusing to consider them as regular employees.

The case was filed in 2008 by about 70 sound engineers, cameramen, audio men, drivers, VTR men, lightmen and camera control unit staffers of ABS-CBN.

The court said the NLRC’s ruling against the talent workers’ petition for regularization and benefit claims in October 2008 and January 2009 went against already settled precedents.
