It was 1999, and with his former boss now gone—replaced by son Gabby Lopez—that Yalong joined GMA Network Inc. on the invitation of the Jimenez family.

“When Geny died, I got a call from the Jimenez family, and they offered me a job. I was initially hired as a consultant,” Yalong says.

“My job was to prepare the company for an IPO,” he says.

It may have been the new millennium, but Yalong says when he first joined GMA, the company might as well have been in the Stone Age.

At the start of this year, for the first time since Martial Law, ABS-CBN was unseated as the country’s television king. Based on data from AGB Nielsen, GMA now has more viewers nationwide. Up until the end of last year, GMA’s lead was isolated only to the viewer-rich Metro Manila area.

“Now that we have the nationwide lead, advertisers no longer have any argument against us,” he says. He notes that in the past, advertisers have always cited ABS-CBN’s lead in nationwide ratings when negotiating with GMA for ad minute rates.

He says aside from investing heavily in its content and network, GMA’s success over the last decade can also be traced to ABS-CBN.

Yalong is the third leg of the tripod that keeps GMA standing. The two others, of course, are chair Felipe L. Gozon and president Gilberto R. Duavit Jr.

Like many of the Philippines’ movers and shakers, Yalong was a “graduate” of SGV & Co., the country’s top accounting firm. One of his closest friends there was Jaime J. Bautista, the current president and chief operating officer (COO) of flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL).

NO OTHER WOMAN REPORTEDLY HITS P100 M IN 5 DAYS!

The romantic drama “No Other Woman” which stars Anne Curtis, Derek Ramsay and Cristine Reyes is said to surpass the P100 million mark last night according to Star Cinema’s AdProm director Roxy Liquigan.

The Ruel Bayani-helmed movie was rated A by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).

It’s interesting to note that “No Other Woman” cancelled its premiere night last Tuesday, September 27, because of typhoon Pedring but on its opening day last Wednesday, it reportedly raked-in an impressive P15-million at the box-office.

By virtue of its P100 million gross in less than a week, “No Other Woman” is set to take the no. 1 slot in the top grossing Pinoy films for 2011 list.

PINOY VERSIONS OF 2 INTERNATIONAL SINGING COMPETITION SET TO AIR ON ABS-CBN!

News reports confirm that the Kapamilya Network has already won the rights to air the Philippine versions of  'The X Factor' from UK and the international sensation The Voice! Both singing competitions will be the highlight of the Network's line-up of shows for next year with X Factor Philippines' set to be launched on Ferbuary, 2012. It is scheduled to replace Pinoy Big Brother Unlimited which will commence in the fourth quarter of 2011. The Voice will follow next as the batlle oif reality shows heat up!

The  Philippine versions (ABS-CBN) is under the unit of Alou Almaden ('Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal', 'Pilipinas Got Talent', 'Showtime', 'The Singing Bee').

THREE BROTHERS ENTERS THE AFTERNOON BATTLE THIS OCT 3!

This Monday, another Korean series will premiere in the first and true home of Asianovelas! Three Brothers replaces The Fierce Wife this October 3 in Kapamilya Gold.

The story revolves aroung the three sons of Kim Sun Kyung, a retired police officer: Gun Kang, Hyun Chal and Yi Sang.

His eldest son Gun Kang made many wrong decisions in life, ending up being divorced and going bankrupt. Gun Kang gets remarried to Chung Nan. His second son Hyun Chal is the envy of the town and pride of his father. He runs a number of businesses which are quite successful. His wife Woo Mi often sacrificed her happiness for the benefit of the Kim family. As for the last son Yi Sang, he follows in his father’s footsteps by becoming a police officer. Oftentimes the father and the son clash each other. As Yi Sang married Eo Young, the daughter of his father’s deadly foe, an ex-convict Sun Kyung traced and eventually arrested a long time ago.
