ABS-CBN NETS NEARLY P1-B IN Q1 2011!

MANILA, Philippines - ABS-CBN Corp. on Thursday reported lower first quarter earnings due to the absence of election-related advertisements.

The country's largest multimedia conglomerate said consolidated net income during the first 3 months of 2011 fell 10% from a year ago to P976 million as revenues went down 15% to P6.6 billion.

However, stripping out one-time gains, core net income was P302 million, up 12% versus last year's recurring earnings of P269 million, ABS-CBN chief finance officer Rolando Valdueza said in a briefing.

Valdueza said advertising revenues for the period declined 21% to P4 billion. Taking out placements made by political candidates running for last year's elections, advertising revenues this year went up 10% due to higher minutes sold and a programmed rate increase.

Consumer sales, in the meantime, fell 5% to P2.5 billion on a 15% decline in revenues of ABS-CBN Global, which was hit by the appreciation of the peso against the US dollar and a cut in subscriber base.

ABS-CBN's total expenses fell 13% to P4.7 billion due to cost management efforts, while capital expenditures surged 82% to P886 million.

ABS-CBN said it maintained its national audience share and ratings leadership with prime-time audience share averaging 41% in the first quarter, based on Kantar Media National TV Ratings' figures.

For 2011, the Lopez-led company has set a profit target of P3.1 billion to P3.2 billion.

Wow! Bumaba pa yan kasi hindi wala ng campaign period ngayon. Tandaan, this is a "NET" income....

Magaling ang financial management ng ABS CBN ngayon. Kahit na naapektuhan ito dahil sa paglakas ng piso ay namage pa rin nilang makakuha ng almost 1 billion NET INCOME.

let's hear it from an abs-cbn employee:

ABS-CBN Corporation is a conglomerate of different companies, please do not compare our operating income to GMA-7′s. It is greatly incomparable.

As for the debt, our debt-to-asset ratio is very healthy. We needed the financing option because it’s healthy, and a company’s debt is an indication of its capacity to pay and its commitment to expansion through capital expenditures. If you are a good steward of your company, you will consult your CFO to see if a debt will indeed be more advantageous rather than using your own company’s earnings to pay for CAPEX – and usually getting financing options is more rewarding than spending money of your own.

This is not a household, this is a company we’re running. If a company has visions for expansion, you need to get the trust of banks to finance your expansion. ABS-CBN has great visions for expansion. We are through with basic TV productions. We are now looking for other avenues of growth. We have set the standards and now others are cramming to chase our achievements.

For the labour dispute, you do not know what happened. There are two sides of every story so we must let the courts decide. The rally happened last time because they heard we were given profit shares that are really lucrative and the laid-off staff cannot accept the fact that ABS rewarded our hardwork amidst the case hearing.

We are in the service of the Filipino worldwide. There are politics inside the company but you cannot deny the public service we commit for all Filipinos. We are most of the time, if not all the time, the first to help and reach out remote areas. We dont stop helping unless our help is not needed anymore.

We dont advertise all of the help we extend to our fellowmen.

All of you are bound to your opinions. But please, watch your language because ABS-CBN does not deserve to be badmouthed as well as other companies.
