ABS-CBN TO SPEND P1-B ON DIGITAL TV!

ABS-CBN Corp. has earmarked P1 billion for the rollout of digital terrestrial television (DTT) until next year in anticipation of high demand for the new services.

Rolando Valdueza, ABS-CBN chief operating officer, said P600 million is allocated this year for the rollout in Luzon and P400 million next year for the Visayas and Mindanao.

ABS-CBN is awaiting the issuance by the National Telecommunications Commission of the implementing rules and regulations for DTT, which will pave the way for the migration from analog.

"We are ready (to roll out) as soon as the NTC issues the guidelines" Valdueza said.

Early last month, the ABS-CBN was the first broadcast network to introduce digital television services, called DTV digibox, which aims to capture 90 percent of the low-income household in the country without cable.

The DTV digibox will serve as the viewer’s gateway to enjoying five new premium TV channels on free-to-air TV. It will be available in Luzon this year then in the Visayas and Mindanao next year.

GMA-7 to surpass net income forecast, hike advertising rates
by Jeremiah F. de Guzman

GMA Network Inc., the country’s second- biggest broadcasting company, said it will likely register a net profit of P3 billion this year, surpassing its P2.8-billion income forecast.

“We have reached our target and we are going to exceed it,” Felipe Gozon, GMA Network chairman, president and chief executive, told reporters late Monday.

GMA Network earlier this year forecast a P2.8-billion net income in 2009, up 18 percent from last year’s. The compay reported a net profit of P2.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, up 9.5 percent year-on-year.

Gozon said the company had reached the income target of P2.8 billion before the start of December, adding that posting a P3-billion profit this year was possible. He said the company also planned to increase in ad rates in the first quarter next year.

“Our ad rates are still less than [ABS-CBN] Channel 2, and that serves as our room for growth,” Gozon said.

Gozon said election-related spending helped in boosting the revenues of GMA Network and noted an unusual surge in advertising expenses toward the second half.

He cited that the fourth quarter was usually a weak month for advertising revenues.

“Maybe because they held off in the first semester due to financial crisis,” said Gozon, adding that “there is growth rather than recession” in the second semester.

GMA Channel 7 contributes a lion’s share to the revenues of the network, while the international business remains the second-biggest source.

Gozon said advertisers who held off in the early part of the year were now recovering and started to spend in the last few months.

He said he saw higher revenues next because of the presidential elections and the economic recovery.

GMA Network will allot P400 million for capital expenditures in 2010 to upgrade transmitters and other network facilities.

Gozon said the company would finance the capital expenditures through internal cash.

“With more than P2.8-billion net income, we can afford a P400-million capex,” he said.

Gozon, meanwhile, said GMA Network was prepared for the country’s shift to digital TV but expressed concern about the 2015 deadline set by the government.

“[Digital TV] is very nice to hear... but we cannot afford this kind of change,” Gozon said, citing that most households might not afford the expensive cost of setting up boxes.
