LOPEZ INC. TO WIPE OUT DEBT THANKS TO ABS-CBN'S STRONGER FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE!

ABS-CBN Mother company, Lopez Inc. (formerly Benpres Holdings Corp.) is in talks with creditors to restructure P1.8 billion of debt in line with its goal to further pare down obligations, according to a top company official.

Lopez Holdings president and chief operating officer Salvador Tirona said negotiations center on a 12.5-year bullet repayment and a fixed rate of four to seven percent per annum.

Tirona said the Lopez holding firm’s priorities are to wipe out its deficiency and clean up its balance sheet so it can be in a position to declare dividends next year.

Lopez Holdings has significantly trimmed its debt from a high of $560 million (P27B) in 2002 when it declared a debt standstill to P3 billion as of end-June this year.

The sale of key assets made it possible for Lopez Holdings to reduce its debt to a manageable level.

The Lopez clan has sold out of water distribution (Maynilad Water Services Inc.) and toll roads (First Philippine Infrastructure Inc.) businesses as well as most of its stake in the country’s largest power retailer, Manila Electric Co., to the First Pacific Co. Ltd. of Hong Kong led by Manuel V. Pangilinan.

In 2008, it also sold its 18-percent stake in The Medical City to an affiliate of Lombard Asia.

In the first half this year, Lopez Holdings posted net earnings of P11.38 billion or almost 24 times the P475 million recorded in the same period a year ago on the divestment by First Philippine Holdings Corp. of its 6.7-percent stake in Meralco.

Unaudited consolidated revenues rose 44 percent to P16.84 billion, mainly driven by the impressive performance of associate ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. which saw its earnings rise 179 percent on strong advertising minutes growth for flagship TV station, Channel 2.

Benpres is confident it would sustain its positive operating performance for the rest of the year given higher contributions from FPHC and ABS-CBN

FPHC is a leading investor in sustainable energy through First Gen Corp., manufacturing through First Philec Corp., construction through First Balfour, and property development through Rockwell Land Corp. and First Philippine Industrial Park. First Gen controls geothermal energy pioneer Energy Development Corp., natural gas power generators First Gas Corp. and several hydro facilities.

ABS-CBN is the country’s largest multimedia news and entertainment content provider and controls Sky Cable Corp., the country’s largest cable TV service provider. Also under Benpres is Bayan Telecommunications Inc.

I agree..actually the mere fact that local and international lenders trust ABS-CBN is already a proof that the company is in a healthy financial condition...

If you read in between lines, the article points that among the LOPEZ Inc subsidiary, ABS-CBN is the one that pays out the debt incured by the group...

nevertheless GMA's clean balance gives it an edge especially that enormous capitalization is needed for the country's shift to Digital from Analog....

utak sari-sari store kasi ibang nagcocomment dito e

@network war

speaking of transition to digital to analog, di ba lahat ng tv satation ay nirequired na mag digital na in 2013?

@observer

opo, actually at least P1b annually daw ang magagaastos ng ABS-CBN for 3-5 years ...But I read an article din na GMA-7 has been buying the required facilities years earlier so mas lesser nalang daw ang gagastusin nila for the Digitalization...

CoolSparks said...

on the other hand...mas excited ang Dos sa Digitalization kasi maeeradicate na yung disadvantage nila sa signal sa Mega Manila (because of low frequency issues)....On that case magiging parehas na daw ang labanan ng mga shows sa MM...and base from what I understand dun sa article na nabasa ko, it seems that ABS-CBN recognizes the fact that MEga manila Ratings is crucial for the advertisers...

observer said...

@network war

i believe every area is crucial..
i think ABS-CBN just recognizes na they are only 2nd sa Mega Manila kaya doble trabaho sila to attract mega manila viewers..

TV ratings do not speak in behalf of the whole Filipino race who are watching free tv. pag lumabas ka ng bahay, makikita mo kung ano talaga pinapanood ng mga tao something that TV ratings can't and will never perfectly measure.

Nielsen TV ratings show that GMA is ahead in Mega Manila while survey firms like Pulse Asia says that ABS, particularly TV patrol is more credible and trusted. Advertisers also go for ABS stars so it contradicts the TV ratings that GMA is getting in Mega Manila.

ER said...

Basta na lang magapagcomment si EwwGMA.wahaha

Read the article first!!! It's not ABS-CBN (network) who has that debt in the first place. It's the Lopez Inc. And due to ABS-CBN's financial stability, it's one of the greatest contributors for the Lopez Inc. to pay it's debts. Get it?

hahahahahaha

Anonymous said...
