GMA NEWS ONLINE WINS ROTARY AWARD FOR INNOVATION FOR THE ELECTION COVERAGE!

The Rotary Club of Manila (RCM) has selected GMA News Online as the recipient of a special citation for "outstanding new media approaches" in delivering the news in this year's RCM Journalism Awards, the longest-running media awards in the country.

In only the second year that the Rotary has recognized innovations in journalism, GMA News Online was chosen by the awards' board of judges for the data-driven ways it covered the 2010 automated elections, said Ana Kun Toledo, executive secretary of the RCM Secretariat, in a phone interview with GMA News Online.

"The board of judges focused on the relevant information [GMA News Online] posted on its website, and concluded that the stories about the elections gave a lot of input for the electorate," Toledo said.

In addition to the daily coverage of the campaigns and enterprise stories about the leading candidates, GMA News Online featured online tools used by media for the first time in Philippine election coverage.

Its election dashboard, a special microsite that aggregated and displayed election-related data, included interactive maps that visualized the campaign trails of each presidential candidate. Starting on election day May 10, 2010, apps developed by GMA's New Media, Inc. processed Comelec's raw election data into results that could be displayed in real-time on a user-friendly platform in the form of a clickable Philippine map.

GMA News Online was the only news source in the nation that presented election results of every candidate down to the municipal level, including all party-list groups.

The site's groundbreaking election coverage drew a record number of page views for the site on a single day, peaking at 12 million on May 11, 2010.

Toledo said GMA News Online's efforts caught the attention of this year's board of judges, which include former Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno (chairman), former UP College of Mass Communication Dean Luis Teodoro, RCM Vice President Benjamin Diokno, and former ambassador to the United Kingdom Cesar Bautista, who is a Rotarian himself.

This is only the second year the 91-year-old organization is giving the special citation, Toledo said, which seeks to recognize fresh forms of reportage.

In 2010, the non-profit news agency Vera Files was the first recipient of the award.

"This is very gratifying for all of us who worked ourselves to the bone during the elections. We're big believers in data journalism and data visualization. This award tells us that we may be on the right path," said GMA News Online's editor-in-chief Howie Severino .

Already on its 45th year, the RCM Journalism Awards has sought to encourage excellence in Philippine journalism by giving recognition to journalists and media agencies which performed outstandingly.

The awarding ceremonies for this year's Awards will be held on May 19, Thursday, at the Manila Polo Club. - GMA News

The producers of AMAYA should set things straight and clarify issues once and for all. They should classify what kind of a TV production Amaya is: a fiction, a culture and history-based series, etc. If indeed Amaya is fiction then it should not in any way use any of the cultural traditions of the indigenous people because culture and ...history should never be played nor experimented with. If Amaya on the other hand is historically and culturally-based then it should stick to the facts of culture and history.

Amaya should be one of the two and not a combination of the two.... for history and culture will never be a part of any fictional story. The characters maybe fictional thats acceptable but the details of culture and history should always be exact and specific. For if not, then we are only mocking our own culture and history as a Filipino.

----- The caption on top is an anecdote to the page's previous post that is reposted below:

The BINUKOT TRADITION of the SULODNON / PANAY BUKIDNON people of the town of Tapaz in Capiz and the towns of Maasin, Janiuay, Lambunao and Calinog in Iloilo is getting a boost in GMA7's "AMAYA" but sad to say, they are committing a big historical and cultural blunder for the wrong portrayal of a BINUKOT!

A BINUKOT is a woman who is supposed to be living in isolation for her entire life. She dwells in a dark room devoid of sun exposure so that her skin will maintain its fair glow. She is given the best food, not allowed to work and she is carried in a hammock when she is moved from one place to another. She is only allowed to go out in veiled attire during the night prior to crop planting and cultivation to dance and chant for a good harvest. Binukots are healthwise frail and weak because of the lack of physical activity. A certain Binukot claimed that her feet bleed when she tried to walk for the first time. These women also command a good dowry price for men interested to marry them and most importantly, the SULODNON / PANAY BUKIDNON CULTURE and BINUKOT TRADITION is only found in the mountains of WESTERN VISAYAS.

AMAYA played by Marian Rivera portrays a Binukot..... but she is ironically a warrior princess fighting off with men and other nemesis in the TV production in broad daylight. The setting of Amaya is situated in pre-colonial Central Visayas which is far from reality since Binukots are women of Western Visayas. GMA7 claimed to have conducted a research with UP-Diliman historians regarding Amaya's plot but the question is: why is there such a big deviation from the original BINUKOT TRADITION of the SULODNONs / PANAY BUKIDNONs?
